摘要:随着人类步入21世纪,社会不断进步,科学技术不断发展,国际间的交往日益加强,外语成为不可缺少的交往工具,因此,外语教学就显得更为重要。回顾历史,外语教学的发展从来都是与社会发展进步密切相关的。作者通过对本课题的研究,探讨传统教育、传统观念对新时期外语教学所产生的影响,旨在弘扬优秀的传统理念,不断探索新时期新的教学模式,解决我国英语教学普遍存在的某些问题,巩固外语教学已取得的成绩,使外语教学水平上一个新台阶。

Abstract

As we go forward into the 21st century, the society progresses constantly, the science and technology unceasingly develops, and the international contact between countries strengthens day by day. Obviously, the foreign language is the essential contact tool. Therefore, the foreign language teaching becomes important. Looking back into the history, we see that the development of foreign language teaching has always been related to the progress of the society. So, in the study of this subject,the paper will discuss our traditional education and traditional ideas, which affect foreign language teaching in the new epoch. Conclusively, we should carry forward the fine tradition and constantly explore the new ways of teaching to solve our common problems in English language teaching. Besides, the writer will also consolidate the achievements already made in the foreign language teaching, trying to raise foreign language teaching in the country to a new level.

Introduction

China is a large country, and the task of foreign language teaching is very heavy. Because of the imbalance in economic development, the situation of foreign language education varies greatly. Due to various reasons, such as the traditional concepts of education and evaluation system, in addition to language teaching skills focusing not on the use of language but knowledge intake, and the content far from social life, the teaching lacks changes and innovation. The teacher-student relationship is orientated toward “the absolute authority of the teachers” and teachers have absolute authority, while students have absolute obedience, which leads to a teacher-centered classroom situation with students passively accepting what the teacher says. Therefore, the "spoon-fed" teaching appears in English classroom. It’s contrary to the effective and new English teaching concepts in this era. So, the issue is that we should base the teaching on reality, recall our traditional education model, analyze the general features of English language teaching, discuss the English methods commonly used in English language teaching, establish new teacher-student relationship, and explore new models of English language teaching.

Negative results in English teaching have been produced by the idea of “the absolute authority of the teachers” in China. In fact, “the absolute authority of the teachers”, as a kind of Chinese traditional education idea, affirmed the absolute authority of teachers, students’ absolute obedience, and led to a teacher-centered classroom situation where students passively accepted knowledge. It emphasized “A strict teacher produces outstanding students.” and “A teacher for a day is a father for a lifetime.” However, in the 21st century, The English language teaching plays an important role in school education in China. It’s the traditional education idea and methods that lead to the slow development of English-teaching. In order to develop our English language teaching, we should carry fine Chinese traditions, analyze the general features in English language teaching and the universal English language teaching methods, establish new relationship between teachers and students, and explore new models in English language teaching. In a word, in the following days, we still have to make more efforts to look for the best teaching methods in English language teaching.
