A new image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) technique is expected to improve breast-sparing treatments through more accurate imaging and more targeted dose delivery.
Breast cancer patients at Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust (Ipswich, UK) are among the first in the United Kingdom to participate in a study to evaluate IGRT, which enables clinicians to more accurately image the cancer site at the time of treatment. Clinicians at the hospital are using the On-Board Imager device, developed by Varian Medical Systems (Palo Alto, CA, USA), to better image the post-lumpectomy breast for radiotherapy.
