Chapter 1 Introduction
According to Hu Zhuanglin, “we can all note that language plays a central role in our lives as individuals and the social beings.”(2001) While in Hailiday’s opinion, languages “functions both as expression of and as metaphor for social progress that lies behind the dynamics of the relation of language and social context (1964). As virants of languages, dialects should have been attached with equal importance, if not more. However, dialect is such a common part of our life and humanity that too much about it has been taken for granted. If we are not fully aware of the nature and the function of our dialect, we may be ignorant of the constitute of our essential humanity. On the contrary, a better study on it will facilitate our life in all aspects. The need to accept a wide range of speech behaviors rather than to change people’s habit is the key tone of this study. In stead of discriminating dialects, it is suggested that we’d better take advantage of dialect and its social value to facilitate our human in the aspects of economy, culture, politics etc. However, our society is by no means composed of a dialect. Many western linguists insist that Chinese is a family of languages rather than a single language. It is estimated that there are more than 80 regional dialects in china now. However, many, if not most, are phased out in the long river of history. But it is the case with Chaoshan dialect, which has been outstood all the historical tests.

潮汕方言及其生命力
As the discussions indicate, Chaoshan dialect maintain its vitality in 2 ways: on one hand, 5 factors suggested by Kerswill and Williams determined the Dialect-Mixture Outcomes for native speaker. By means of dialect, people is much more likely to establish their own circle, while still having tight tie with hometown, which led to the failure of big linguistic changes. Because a large group of inhabitants maintained the local dialect forms, these forms remained in the dialect mix, and in the end, prevailed over others around them. In this way, people can maintain their linguistic stability and vitality, which in turn avail themselves of prosperity in all aspects. On the other hand, it is related to attitude to social integrations of second dialect learners. When a powerful dialect flows into another place, its use will certainly influence user’s ability to form ties and integration into a social network as well. Owning to their characteristics and mechanisiam, Chaoshan is able to exert great influence where they settle down as a super group. Chaoshan is a people attaching great importance to connection, therefore, for those who need or want to establish relationship with Chaoshan, dialect plays a decisive role. The social need combined with positive attitude result in dialect popularity and vitality.
As far as dialectal contact is concerned, many linguists reached a consensus on the result that at least one of the dialect, always immigrant’s dialect, will undergo changes to keep their vitality, if not be melted. Examining Chaoshan dialect by two theories: Kerswill and William’s Dialect-Mixture and Ellis’s attitude, the author find it is not the case with all the dialects. It does not really meet the expectations of many linguists. Research is conducted from the angel of both Chaoshan natives and dialectal learners. At the same time, Kerswill and William’s 5 factors is also used to explain learners’ attitude. In such new ways, new result is available. The result indicates that Chaoshan dialect succeeds in keeping its vitality while maintaining stable in stead of being taken place of, since the main elements of Chaoshan dialect''s stability and continuity are the powerful Chaoshan people, which controlled all aspects of city life. The expression or attainment of group identity is the main factor motivating linguistics choices. Due to the increasing development of Chaoshan, When Chaoshan people emigrate to a new area or country, in order to get identified with Chaoshan community; local people are likely to learn Chaoshan dialect.
Dialect is such a common part of our life and humanity that too much about it has been taken for granted. If we are not fully aware of the nature and the function of our dialect, we may be ignorant of the constitute of our essential humanity. In stead of discriminating dialects, it is suggested that we’d better take advantage of dialect and its social value to facilitate our human in the aspects of economy, culture, politics etc. A good case in point is Chaoshan dialect. According to the research on it, people at least have a general idea of how to seek identification with each other and promote human progress.
Taking the previous discussion into consideration, conclusion can be reached that a dialect owned by a super group is more likely to maintain. Standard dialect is derived from dialect in order to meet the need of social development. Resulting from flourishing of a certain speech community, will a regional dialect take place of the standard one? If it does, when and to what extend it will happen? Is there any other regions where Chaoshan dialect can not share the advantage? Due to the limitation and knowledge, the author doesn’t answer these questions. So, these call for further researches in this area.
