内容摘要：中国读者大多数关于“垮掉一代”的生活方式及信仰理念的了解都是源于《在路上》这本小说。有些读者对文中所描述的年轻人们的生活方式极为着迷，有的则认为该小说是低俗而令人厌恶的，由此对垮掉一代的主要人物以及他们的作品就带有歧视眼光。然而，文学作品应该以一种无偏见的角度来进行赏析。如果其中有新理念值得我们去赞赏和学习的，那么我们应该推崇它。如果作品其中有糟粕，那么我们也可以从中有所学习并防止我们也犯同样的错。因为垮掉一代的文学作品及他们的生活方式的缘故，他们统统被认为是放荡不羁者。本文试图以详尽及无偏见的方式对垮掉一代进行介绍。同时，本文以杰克凯鲁亚克的《在路上》为研究范本，并联系“垮掉的一代”的概况，分析小说两位主要人物狄安及萨尔，指出小说塑造出的人物特征分别为反权威与矛盾自我。希望通过对两位主要人物的研究及分析，以及对“垮掉的一代”的分析，本文可以提供一个研究《在路上》及“垮掉的一代”的新视点。

Abstract: Our Chinese readers get their knowledge of the Beat generation mostly from the novel on the road, and some of our readers may be in a state of being enchanted by the life style of those young people described in the novel, some may consider that their life style is disgusting and discriminate the Beat generation and their works. However, literary works should be reviewed with an unbiased point of view. If there are new ideas that deserved our respect and learning, we should praise them. If there are short comings, we can also learn from them and stopped from being wrong. Since the Beat generation has been considered as the libertines because of their literary works and their life style. Readers have some kind of misunderstanding of these particular people. This paper tries to introduce the Beat generation in a detailed way and unbiased way. At the same time, this paper tries to find out the essential character of the two main characters by taking On the road as the study object and the background of the Beat Generation. What is hoped is that the research and analysis of the two main characters of the book and the analysis of the Beat generation can offer a different point of view in understanding the book On the road and the Beat Generation.

This paper taking Jack Kerouac’s On the Road as the study object and tries to find out the main character of Dean and Sal. At the same time, the Beat Generation’s general situations are given out. It’s hoped that this paper can provide a new point of reviewing the Beat Generation and also the novel on the road.
Qualitative analysis is used to analyze the two main characters. Their behaviors, dialogues and monologues are research and deeper meanings are founded. By these ways, the characters can be understood analyzed. What’s more, by learning the differences and similarities between Dean and Sal, their essential differences of personality can be discovered. Dean was a person of antiauthority, while Sal was a person of a self in contradiction.
